Summertime's Close - UMass Amherst
9/15/23 @ 7:14pm. When I came across this photo I’d taken nearly two years ago, the first thing that caught my eye was the sunset. Orange and pink clouds split the sky in half over the library, with the Mount Holyoke Range in the background. It was a Friday evening on campus, that transition time when students move between the dining halls, dorms, and evening plans, and one of the last summer nights in Amherst.
The sunset itself was amazing, but when I looked closer I started noticing details I hadn’t seen the first few times I looked at the photo. Instead of just one picture, I now see four or five smaller scenes together, which make up some amazing memories.
There’s the lit path along the campus pond leading up to Old Chapel. Maintenance crews wrapping up their day to the left of the ILC. Students studying in lit windows and breaking down from an event behind the Student Union. Hotel UMass welcoming guests for a late-summer weekend. Cars heading downtown, and a group of students on the parking garage roof, taking in the same sunset I was. This one’s less about the sunset and more about the life happening around it that makes it so memorable
